THE TRAIN

Neustrelitz, Germany, 2nd February 1945

The night was bone-chilling cold. Hilbert Sommer stood near the Daimler-Benz G4 Staff Car watching the SS troops unloading the trucks and placing everything into the freight cars of the train. He’d lost count of how many trucks had come and gone but he recognized them all. He’d seen them as they had been loaded and left Carinhall.

The artworks and artifacts that had been intended to go to separate destinations were all here in one place being loaded. Once more a line of trucks pulled away, the vacated spaces quickly taken by the next in line. This one was loaded with larger crates. Heavier. He heard Wolff say, “I want them all loaded into a single freight car. Understood?”

A soldier saluted and hurried away. Wolff turned and walked towards Sommer. He stopped near the young SS-Unterscharführer and said, “Sergeant, you are witnessing something beyond your wildest imaginings. When Germany rises from the ashes like the phoenix, all this wealth will fund the new Nazi party. It will be bigger and better than the one which we see crumbling before us. Already the framework is being assembled on the other side of the world. When the time is right, the Reich shall return.”

Sommer straightened and his bootheels snapped together. “Sir.”

“Never mind that, Hilbert. Is all in order for the train’s arrival?”

“Yes, sir. The line into the mountains is clear.”

Wolff nodded. “Good, good.”

“What of the Reichsmarschall, Herr General?”

“What about him? He will squeal like a little pig but do nothing. Besides, once the enemy get their hands on him, he will most certainly hang or be shot.”

A captain approached the two men. He passed Wolff a framed picture, saluted, and turned to hurry off. Wolff looked at Sommer and said, “This is for you, Hilbert. Take it. For being loyal and doing what I ask without question.”

Sommer stiffened once more. “Thank you, General.”

“You have earned it. But there is more. I have also decided to promote you. From now on you are a sturmbannführer. Congratulations, Herr Major.”

“I—I don’t know what to say. I am honored.”

“It will be your job to make sure that after the war, the treasures are kept safe from discovery.”

“But how, sir?”

“You will go with the train. I have hand-picked another man who will travel with you. There will also be a small escort. When you reach your destination the train crew and the escort must not be allowed to leave. Do you understand?”

Sommer frowned. “You want—”

“Not allowed to leave, Hilbert. The future of the new Reich depends on it.”

“It will be done, Herr General. But what of you?”

“I am a resourceful man, Hilbert. I will get by after the war. You just concentrate on your mission.”

“Jawohl, Herr Oberstgruppenführer. I will not let you down.”
